Have You Ever Thought About Starting a Non-Profit? An Interview With a CEO.
Most people want to give back. What gets you excited about giving back? Do you want to contribute to orphanages, help animals or see a need in the community?
For my friend, Reagan Baker, CEO of the Discipulus Foundation, she saw a need in her community to help high school students obtain scholarships to further their education in trade schools. Why did Baker start this non-profit?
Baker wanted to help students who wish to study at a trade or vocational school after graduation from high school, instead of attending a four year college or university and accumulating massive student loans. According to Make Lemonade, “[i]n the U.S., there are more than 44 million student loan borrowers who hold more than $1.4 trillion in student loan debt. If you are a graduate of the Class of 2016, the average student loan debt is $37,172.”
Baker states that, “I created this foundation to spread the word that a four year degree isn’t for everyone, and many people are better off learning a skill. These young adults can then go out into the working world knowing that there is likely a job waiting for them, and that they don’t have to pay back a massive amount of student loans. Our culture places so much importance on earning a Bachelor’s Degree, but our country is in need of people with certain skills. We need to start placing just as much importance on that.” Discipulus Foundation provides scholarships in the following areas of study: automotive repair, culinary arts, HVAC, massage therapy, and welding.
The Discipulus Foundation is constantly growing as more scholarships are received and given to high school graduates. Baker is making a positive impact in the community by responding to the needs of children today. If you would like to donate to the Discipulus Foundation then click the link.
